In a 55 gal. you could put a number of fish. If you chose small fish like tetras, make sure you get plenty for them to school. Larger fish are going to generally be more aggressive, but more pretty. An African cichlid set-up might be attractive, but beware, if you do this that is about all you can put in there, but there is a large variety of Africans. Or you could go with a large goldfish set-up, goldfish don't need anything special and are vary easy to take care of.

A oscar would be wonderful! They are the puppies of the fish world. I have one and his name is seymore. They will respond to you as a dog would. There are things to be aware of before owning a oscar and one of the best places to find the info on the net is at forums@oscarfish.com This is an awesome site for you to go and look for any fish you would like to learn about especially beautiful cichlids. With a 55 gallon tank make a careful choice you can live with. Having a fish aquarium is such a wonderful hobby!

Don't get Goldfish, they are boring, big, and messy! Try Loaches! Yo-yo Loaches are very active and comical, smae with Kuhli Loaches. You should keep at least 3 of each kind for the best results. Also, you could then add some other schooling fish like Tetras for color! Avoid Plecostomus because they get very large and they are very ugly fish, they look like swimming hunks of crap! If you want something to eat your algae, try Otto Cats. They stay about 2 inches and stay less aggressive and more active than other cleanup crews.

Lots of possibilities in a tank that size. Tetras, danios, rasboras, barbs (all of which are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 6+ by species, although I wouldn't recommend neon tetras to start), corydoras catfish (keep in groups of 3+), livebearers (guppies, platies, mollies, swordtails - for these keep one male for every 2-3 females), dwarf gouramis, rainbowfish (keep 2 males per 1 female) all make good starters. See these links for info on these fish:

http://www.fishlore.com/
Also see this site for groupings by fish size and temperment: http://www.elmersaquarium.com/h701elmers_freshwater_handbook.htm You can look up the individual fish by clicking on their names and getting info on the conditions each needs. Those with a hardiness rating of "A" or "AA" are the easiest to keep.

I love "puppy" like, smart fish. In one 55, I have a group of adorable and cute fancy goldfish. In another I have a frisky oscar. Either one would be fun -- do what you like! I like bigger hardy fish that you can interact with. But those zippy ones that just do a lot of stuff but never mind you may also be your thing.

Red parrot fish are ver cute and clean fish. Very easy to take care of. DO NOT get an ocscar if you don't want a messy fish!

for our first tank we got a zebra tetras and neon tetras, they are a hearty fish....and a plicostomus(alge eater) to keep the tank clean. Also we got live plants ...and found that we didn't have to do much to maintain the tank at all. Have fun and enjoy your tank.
