E = 3W
E + 4 = 2(W + 4)

Substitute

3W + 4 = 2(W + 4)
3W + 4 = 2W + 8
W + 4 = 8
W = 4

E = 3(4)
E = 12

Warren is 4 years old and Erin is 12 years old.

Equation 1: e = 3w
Equation 2: e + 4 = 2(w + 4)

We can substitute 3w for e in equation 2, and we get
3w +4 = 2(w + 4)

3w + 4 = 2w + 8
w = 4

So, Warren is 4, Erin in 12.
In four years, Warren will be 8 and Erin will be 16.

Let x be Warren's age.
I'm going to make two separate rows: Age now and age in 4 years.

Age now: Warren: x, Erin: 3x
Age in 4 years: Warren: x + 4, Erin: 3x + 4

Erin's age in 4 years is 3x + 4.
Warren's age in 4 year is x + 4.

In 4 years Erin will be twice as old as he will be. That is,

{erin's age in 4 years} = 2 times {warren's age in 4 years}

3x + 4 = 2(x + 4)
3x + 4 = 2x + 8
x = 4

That makes Warren's age 4, Erin's age 3(4) = 12.

12 is the age of Erin. And Warren is 4.
12 + 4 = 16
4 + 4 = 8
8/16 = 1/2 (Twice as old.)

Mental math approach:
In 4 years, the age difference changes from 3 times to 2 times, which means Warren's age must be 4 years now. Therefore, Erin's age must be 12 years.

Let Warren's age be w yr.
Then Erin's age is 3w yr .........(1)
In 4 years, Warren's age will be w + 4, and Erin's will be
3w + 4.
Therefore:
3w + 4 = 2(w + 4)
Multiply out the brackets:
3w + 4 = 2w + 8
Subtract 2w from each side:
w + 4 = 8
Subtract 4 from each side:
w = 4.
From (1), 3w = 12.
Therefore Warren's age is 4yr, and Erin's is 12yr.

let E be the Erin's age and W be warren's age

Erin's age is 3 times as warren's tells you:
E = 3W

In 4 years, that means both Erin and Warren will be 4 years older, she (Erin i suppose) will be twice as old as he will be tells you:

E + 4 = 2 (W + 4)

we know that E = 3W, plug it in

3W + 4 = 2 (W + 4)

3W + 4 = 2W + 8
W + 4 = 8
W = 4

E = 3W
E = 3(4)
E = 12

Erin is 12 and Warren is 4
