With a 16 year old, I'd be up front and totally honest.
And yes, I'd use it as a learning tool.
I'm conservative.

Truth is better than lies every single time. If I was in any situation as a parent and my child asked me a question I would tell them the truth. Lying to your child does them no good. No good at all. My girlfriend says it is wrong to tell the children that there is no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny or tooth fairy but I don't. They will find out in the end that I was lying anyway so I would rather they knew the truth straight off. Lying to your children can affect them greatly no matter what kind of lie it is. The situation about the STD I would wait for the appropriate age to mention something like that but I wouldn't make up a lie, I would just tell them the basics and tell them they would get to know the full details when they are old enough.

Honey...I have something very important to tell you. Me and your father have decided to get a divorce. I am so sorry. We both love you but we have been having some disagreements lately and we just can not live with one another. I know it is not fair to you...but we really think it would be best for you in the end because we do not want you to see us arguing. We love you alot and we only want what is best. I promise you will get to see both of us. Maybe not everyday but you can talk on the phone to dad. This might be a difficult time that we will face but we are all going to get through it together. I would also like to talk to you about something else. I know you are at that age where people have sex. I just want to tell you some things. I am not telling you to wait until marrige but please please please use good judgement. First find a guy who you really trust and have known for a long time. Do NOT just have sex to have sex. It should be something special that is shared with someone who you love and trust 100%. Even if you do trust them though, always use protection. It is true that you NEVER know what that person has and you should always be safe than sorry.

Generally liberals. But keep in mind this is a general statement. Any child that is 16 should have an understanding relationships and the risk of unprotected sex.
Divorce is so common place that it shouldn't be much of a surprise but it would be difficult for a child, even a 16 year old child, to understand.

On certain issues it's like saying "why not try taking a little cyanide, be openminded, how do you know it's bad for you?" On somethings I have an open mind for example a new product or a better way of doing something. But when someone tells me that because of my ability I HAVE to contribute to those less able(welfare recipents) I say that is evil and armed robbery by proxy. Some things are black and white and if you compromise evil wins.

Huh? Do you think telling a 16 year old who is just about to have his world destroyed and finding out one of his parents is unfaithful that safe sex is the way to go, is for the best? Sometimes when a mommy doesn't put out you have to get satisfied elsewhere? This is just teaching irresponsibility.
We want our kids to be better than us and should always put forth the best example we can. The kid does not need to know all the details of why the divorce is coming, you should focus more on trying to help the kid cope rather than giving a sex ed speech.

I have a problem with your premise. Most mommies and daddies do love their children even if they are having problems in their marriage. Nothing takes the place of honesty, tell the truth to your kids. Who is more honest? The truth tellers.

Liberals are so open minded that their brains fall out.
Seriously, I will discuss STD's with my teenagers no matter any circumstance. We will talk about pregnancy and everything will be in detail. I won't have my children learning lies from other kids. They will know the facts....and no lame public school teacher will tell it like I'll tell it either.
*Oh, and I don't see the need to tell the child mommy got an STD from daddy so she's getting a divorce. That's kinda rough around the edges eh. Infidelity is a serious issue and turning it into a sex ed class is low class in my book.

How can you ever put a question like this in a conservative or liberal bent! What a nasty way to attack someone!
Parents are neither! They are parents. That's it, parent's, not conservative not liberal. Parenting styles have nothing to do with either. Most all parents know about parenting they generally learned from their parents, the good....and the bad! It has nothing to do with Conservative or liberal!
And be careful with STD's as people can be carriers and not know it for decades. Accusing someone of being unfaithful, unless they admit it, is the last thing I would do!

I would probably be classified as a liberal and I feel the kids deserve the truth. Many kids under the age of 16 are well equiped and deserve the truth. I had to inform my kids of something unfortunate about a family member that I could have lied about. Other family members lied to their kids about it. My kids were young teen and have since thanked me for telling them the truth about it.

You even had to ask, repukes will lie, cheat and steal and continue to lie until your so confused that you don't know the truth anymore. Liberals are about the most honest cause they'll tell you like it is without any sugar coating, like it or not.
