It depends on what type of literature and authors you love. I'm a science fiction fan. If I were writing this essay, I'd write it on far future SF technologies or perhaps on possible future political systems featured in SF stories.

I'm sure in what is called "mainstream literature" there are a lot of topics you can feast on.

I'm currently doing a Masters in Contemporary Literature and I think I can help. I don't know what you like to read, and what you have studied so far, so why not drop me an email (from my profile)?

I am guessing you are doing A-levels, and 5,000 sounds really long! (My Masters dissertation only has to be 15,000 words...Not much huh?)

I would personally look at postcolonial literature (i.e. Toni Morrison, Caryl Philips...), or at contemporary British literature, because that is what I like, but if you could tell me what books you have enjoyed reading and studying so far, and what you got your best grades for, I could narrow down the possibilities! ;)

Yes. You could base it on "Why I need a dictionary."
