I'm from the UK, so the importance of a prom is a little lost on me. However, if you're likely to miss, what I understand to be a very important event, as a result of her absence then why not?
Take a friend, or maybe an actual date (won't you be in college soon, a lot of distractions there for a young man) ... just don't forget to give your girlfriend a heads up - it'd be disrespectful not to.

Get her to talk into a camera and have it display on your computer and bring her to the prom via your computer sitting on a cart. Don't forget to hook up a camera on your side aswell.

tell her - ask her if she wouldnt mind u go going with someone else just as a friend. this way she shouldnt feel too left out, and will be honoured that u had the decency to ask her first!
