Boy, they are close. Ted Williams batted .344 lifetime and Babe Ruth .342. But Babe gets the nod. He was a better runner, believe it or not, and lost a lot of his career being a potential hall of fame pitcher (for your Red Sox) to somewhat equilize Ted losing so much time to two wars.
But, really, would anyone say, "Dang, I got stuck with . . ."? Let's say both are in any good top 10 list.

Ted Williams. Ruth played in a much better park for lefthanded power hitters. If the Green Wall was in right field, Ted Williams would have broken all the records.
Williams was also a great corner outfielder. Ruth was never special as a fielder.
Ruth had more rings but he played on teams that may have been better than the All-Stars.
Williams was MVP twice and had triple crowns in two other years.
Ruth hit 60 HR with a .356 average and 164 RBI. Williams hit .406 with 37 HR and 120 RBI. Hard to choose from.

Both are great but gotta go with the Babe. Babe Ruth was bigger than the sport itself, and was considered Americana, maybe the most popular man in the 20's and was synamous with baseball itself...not to mention he was a monster pitcher before he became a monster hitter. Ted was the ultimate hitter and I would rate Ted the better hitter, and missed having the stats Babe did because of his military time. But Ted didnt evoke the emotion and the adulation that Ruth did. Sometimes you just know that both were great and have to be happy with that.

Ted Williams is a better man, but Babe wins hands down. The sad part is that I'm a Red Sox fan:(

Tough question actually, they were both two of the best of all time, no doubt about that !
Williams lost a few years because of the war, & Ruth lost a few years because of pitching ( he pitched for both the red sox & actually a little bit for the yanks after being sold to them ) Ruth was actuallly a great pitcher as of course a great hitter ! Ruth won over 20 games twice, a total of 96 wins as a matter of fact as a pitcher ! Ruth had 17 shutouts & even 4 saves ! ( he even went 5-0 as a yanks starter !) i also read an article in the sporting news a few years ago, that stated babe ruth would of actually been credited with another 40 homeruns or so, but because of the ball landing in foul territory , even after going fair, it was considered a foul ball , instead of a homerun,( like today)& that he should of got credit for those extra homeruns !
ted williams was one heck of a batter as well... he batted over .400 in 1941 ( .406) , & .407 in 1953 !
they both batted left handed & were two of the all time greats !!
They both had a bout the same amount of doubles ( slight edge to williams,( 506 for ruth to williams 525) but ruth had way more triples (136 to williams 71) more homeruns (ruth 714 to williams 521) & stolen bases was a huge landslide in ruths favor ( ruth 123 steals to williams 24) bating was close , with slight egde to williams of .344 to ruths .342)
i think with ruths successs as a two time 20 game winning pitcher & 17 shutouts, & more triples, homeruns, stolen bases, i give the egde to " the babe" ! ( but, williams is definitly right behind him & way above most other hitters ! Two of the hall of fame greats of all time !!

When asking questions about who is better, just leave Ruth out of the discussion. He was simply a full level ahead of everybody else. Better to go Williams/DiMaggio or Williams/Musial.

Factor in that Ruth was a pitcher and, well, it's no contest. Ruth was the better player.
Ted, and we'll never be sure, but if we hair-split extremely finely, probably was a very slightly better hitter.
