I fried my motherboard and am ordering a new one. Will I need to reinstall XP with all my old componenets or can I just plug all my old components (CPU, video card, RAM) into the motherboard and boot from my hard drives as before. If I am going to need to reinstall xp, please tell me why.

A lot will depend on the chipset used on the new motherboard. If the new motherboard uses a different hard drive controller then the install of XP on your hard drive will not recognize it and you will get a lot of errors when you try to boot.
You might luck out and it works, or you might luck out and booting from the XP install CD and doing a 'repair install' might install the proper driver.

In my experience, swapping the hard drive into a new system (or in this case a new motherboard) ends up with XP not being able to load.

You will most likely not have to re-install XP. You will however need to make sure your old memory, vid card, sound card, etc are compatible. Your new motherboard will come with a driver disk, make sure and install it before going forward after the new hardware is installed. It will contain necessary drivers for those components and especially chip drivers that weren't present on the old configuration.

maybe.....if the new motherboard has the same chip set as the old one you will not need to reformat. If the new motherboard has a different chip set (nvidia, via, intell) you will need to reformat the hard drive. When you start your computer, the operating system holds the motherboard drivers for the chip set. if the drivers are wrong, it won't know what to do, and won't boot.

No you don't , if the other components are not changed and it is the same chipset as the old one. To keep the system up to date just flash the BIOS ( as a tech of your computer manufacturer to help you with that) and update the drivers

You should but it is not necessary, win xp should run with the new board even if it is a new motherboard.

Doesnt seem to me like you will need to. Your hardrive is separate from your motherboard.
