Yes SOME are lazy and/or stupid. However, most are not. They're members of the underclass. Their fathers were poor, their great-grandparents were poor, and they can not seem to get out of the cycle. They may have free high school, but in order to survive they need to quit school and work to pay for food and shelter. Some of these people work VERY hard to make minimum wage. The immigrants are able to make it good here because of one major difference-- they EXPECT to succeed. The poor Americans don't have these expectations, they think if it happens, then it happens. Some poor Americans do want to succeed but can't. They don't have the money to even APPLY to college, much less go there. There are scholarships and loans out there, but not enough for every poor person in this country. Others don't even know about those opportunities. They just think they're not that type of person and couldn't fathom going to a higher education. About medicaid, not everyone qualifies for this, and not everyone knows about it. It is a luxury, but not everything is covered by it. There are just SO many reasons why some Americans can't make it in America. Pick up a book at your library or enroll in a college class about this if you want a deeper/longer reason. You will feel enlightened and sickened afterwards.

this answer may seem a bit long winded, but you asked so have the curtasie to read it. their are stupid & lazy people all over world. but here you can blame it all on the government. they keep the slow ones slow because they will cut school fonding if they don't pass them to the next grade instead of repeating the grade that they field. it's called no child left behind. the demacrates want to take care of you and give the stuped, lazy & poor all their basic needs, for their votes. they can bag, borrow & steal for the rest. the republicons create jobs for all of us. although they are low,low paying jobs. for yours and the rich industualest votes.and the poor, stupid & lazy can bag borrow & steal for the rest. and as for as the immigrants that hold those spots in those top universities, guess who pad their tuition. the American tax payer, thats who. and the goverment gives a lot of other immigrants up to $100,000 to git a fresh start, (ower tax money) and look at this new immagreation law. more cheap labor for the industrulist backed republicans, and more votes and people to be dependent on ower demacrats. kind of remminds me of what really started the civil ( or ) war between the states.you had the demacratic southern states that had slaves that they didn't pay, but they furnished all their basic needs. on the other hand the north the industralist backed repablicans payed wages bearly enough to live on, treated you no better then slaves under unsafe working conditions, and supported child labor. in the south if you you worked a slave to death you had to buy another one. in the north you just hird the next one off the boat. i do hope i didn't go over bord. but in the futhuer please don't insult my people or my country. insult my goverment all you want. atlest we have that right in America. hell, i an't to fond of them my self. but we still got the best system and country in the world. why else would all these foraniers want to move here?

People are poor for many reasons, all the ones you mentioned, plus health problems, mental illness, the economy in some areas is very depressed, not evryone in this world has the same talents and abilities, if they did there wouldnt be such things as plumbers, auto mechanics, firemen, etc. Everyone in the united states would have a top job at a university

Let's see. Two years ago I was making a decent salary in a high tech field. I got laid off in downsizing. I spent the next two years studying and getting completely up to-date- in my job skills. I can now professionally run half a dozen programs that make some people 80 to 100 K a year. But I can't get a job.
Now when my money finally runs out, I will be officially poor. But I didn't get there by laziness.
sweetest lady ----that would be a Masters. BUT: your admitting that the american businesses would rather hire an imporverished indian, because it is better for their profit margin reveals that you already know the answer to your question. People are poor sometimes because they are lazy... but more and more often, middle class people are finding themselves in the ranks of the poor BECAUSE OF THE POLICIES OF CORPORATE AMERICA!!!!!!!!! Assuming you believe poor people are all lazy and that was your contention, in a strict debate, this admission on your point would lose you the debate.
Thanks.

First, "poor" people in America are the rich of most other countries. If you look at the people buying their food with food stamps, they are usually overweight, many even obese.
Secondly, Food stamps, wellfare and other programs KEEP people poor. I personally know a man who hesitant to get a job because he know he will lose all the benifits once he does.
Finally, there are a few people who are stupid, lazy or mentally off. My aunt was mentally ill so she couldn't work & relied on the government to support her.
The man I refered to above is smart & good at heart, but is a total screw-up! He is always late & loses anything that comes into his house. No wonder he can't hold down a job! And he has absolutely no self discipline! He is significantly obese & his kids are overweight as well. He isn't exactly lazy because he is often working hard on projects - just the WRONG projects! So the things that really NEED to get done, don't get done. This ends up costing him money.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Catrina - I applaud you! You will not be poor for long! I was referring to the "perpetually poor."
--------------------------------------------------------------
What's my point???
To clarify what "poor" means, why some are poor, and give examples of those I know who are poor.

I guess what we need to do is look at what constitutes poverty in America. The following is from the Heritage Foundation and it describes people who live in poverty in America. It is from 2006.
The following are facts about persons defined as “poor” by the Census Bureau.
Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.
Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)
Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.
Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.
Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher.
The piece goes on to describe how those in poverty in America are far from undernourished and while some families report going hungry in the past year, that is temporary and they eat and have access to food. As an aside, obesity is the number one problem among the poor in America. Only in this country can those who are poor be eating too much.

Well, for starters, an educational system that funds those whose parants have money already--while denying funding to schools in poor areas. That perpetuates poverty from generation to generation. That's one major factor. The child can't take advantage of all the opportunities if he/she never gets a decent enough education to even know what the opportunities are.
But of course, all the self-righteous people who "made it" because they "worked for it" don't count the subsidezed education THEY got. Or the subsidized college education. The tax breaks for a mortgage, the IRA tax shelters, etc. etc. But their quick to whine about "wasting taxpayer's money" on job programs, day-care that would let "welfare mothers" go to school or work, etc.
Those self-righteous jerks don't even desrve to be Americans. They're so full of temselves--thinking they did it all themselves--when the realityis they got it handed to them--mostly at someone else's expense. Then they have the gall to sneer ant anyone who didn't have all the advantages they had.

I'm FAR from stupid or lazy. I am a 41 year old mother of 3, who has went through a husband that married my sister. I retaliated by working 2 jobs that I hated, to raise them since he left state to avoid paying his share.
I work for Fairfield Inn and continue to help them and my 2 year old grand daughter. All accomplished while receiving low income food stamps!
I am a published author 9 times with writings on a disk. I have struggled to overcome in life with people like you judging me while in line at the grocery store.
I can only hope this will give you a stereotype wake-up call. God bless you and yours. :)~

The poor in America do have a lot of options that 3rd world countries do not have true--and a lot of poor in America do take advantage and rise to a status you might even approve of. Health Care in America rates 37th in the world so if these poor Americans don't get too sick they have a good chance to become another Abe Lincoln
