like if a punk/metal type band (short, not-to-complex songs, only 2 takes or so) wanted to record a 4-song demo and have it mixed and make the instruments sound like they do on records (i don't have a clue what thats called or how its done!)
how much would that cost at an average studio?

For the price of a couple of days in a studio, you can build your own, easily. The new digital recorders are very nice. 8 tracks would work for you great. Get one for $600.00. A nice condensor mic for vocals, and a hand full of Sure SM57's and 58's. And a basement. The experience is very valuable. You will learn so much about writing and dubbing your own songs. The digital quality you can achieve this way, may be all you need. Have fun, don't burn-out!
