My sister has a '98 Cavalier and it did the same thing. Turns out the catalytic converter was bad, creating too much backpressure for the engine to run with a load on it. This is very common in GM vehicles, my '93 S-10 had the same problem.

because you either have insufficient fuel pressure or volume.
Either way, you will need to replace the fuel pump. It's located in the gas tank so the tank will have to be lowered from the car. Fuel pressure should be between 41-47 psi. It could also be that the fuel filter is restricted so if you have never changed the filter or it has been a very long time since it was replaced last, change that first and then recheck the fuel pressure. This is the most common problem associated with the symptoms you have listed. Of course, there could be other problems. It may also be that the catalytic converter is restricted. Exhaust backpressure should be less than 0.5 psi at idle and less than 0.75 psi at 3000 rpm. You can check for a restriced exhaust by either removing the oxygen sensor and starting the engine, or removing the oxygen sensor and installing a 0-5psi pressure gauge where the oxygen sensor goes. This engine doens't use a mass air flow sensor, which could also be the cause.

I had this problem with my girlfriends 97 cavalier. She has had instrument cluster problems before but it hasnt been this bad, The speedometer did not work when her dad gave her the car. I put a new speed sensor in the transmission thinking that would help. It did not fix the problem. After driving the car anyways for a few yrs i noticed the instrument cluster lights and guages were not working right a lot of the times.I went out and got a good used instrument cluster to try and fix the car. It did not work either. So we drove the car a few more yrs!!! lol. The car finally got to where the security light would come on every so often but the car still ran. After a while the car got to where it would start and run a few seconds and just quit. I finally got tired of trying to start the car in warm and cold weather. I thought the cold had something to do with it because it would seem to run if started in the warmer weather. 40 degrees and above ??? The car had a mind of its own!!! lol. I finally went down to the junkyard and bought another instrument cluster from a 98 cavalier. I put it in there and reprogrammed the thing and wa=la!!! It fixed the damn thing. Now all the guages work, the starts and keeps running and all the lights work right too !!!So.... all you people that are having problems with your 96-1999 cavalier.,, Please make sure your lights and guages are working right before attemping to make any repairs on any thing else! I was getting ready to put a new ignition switch in the car but 180 dollars for a new ignition switch was a little to expensive for me!! so, all in all a lot of you have a bad instrument cluster making your stall or die after a few seconds of running !! Dont forget to reprogram the new instrument cluster !!

sounds more like a fuel injection problem. Could be sensor. The car wouldn't keep starting if it was the fuel pump. Waste of time. Maybe a throttle position sensor. Sounds like a good time for a mechanic

Your fuel filter is probably clogged one get it replaced it has enough flow when idleing but added pressure for consumption cannot get through. (5-10 bucks) next put in some STP fuel cleaner if the filter was clogged you probably have some gunk in your carb or injectors.
