hello after trying and reading up different solutions; non of them has worked for me. i have two computers on my network a laptop connected wirelessly and my desktop pc wired to the router (using netgear router without any issues). i have established the networking between the two computers so that the windows xp home based laptop can see my computer on the network and can access my shared folders, where as i cannot see anything under my network and i cannot seem to find any other devices connected to the internet at all. if anyone can help i would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

sorry about the confusion; what i meant to say was that. everything works fine under the windows xp laptop. where as in my windows vista computer i cannot see any devices on the network.
i can also share files and access the shared folders, present on the vista pc from XP laptop.
where as in the vista pc i cannot see the xp based machine at all.

You should be asking this question at the help option of the Microsoft website instead of Yahoo! questions and answers. It is risky to take advice from total strangers on the Internet who may cause you more problems than you already are trying to solve.

Did you set up a Workgroup? It is needed to see the network units and also did you share the networked items on the host computer. I found those two things needed for my network. If looking for a printerr use the add new printe/-network method and have the printer driver software available to load. Network drivers are different from direct connect.

your comments are confusing.
You should be able to see notebook from desktop and desktop from notebook (network shared drives only). Network shared printers should also be seen.
I do not know what you mean by "cannot see anything under my network".
I do not know what you mean by "devices connected to the internet". If you mean the router, you should be able to log onto it by entering the default gateway ip address in the Internet Explorer address bar.
Perhaps if you were clearer we could help.

Try disabling and firewalls or security setting on both systems.
Download and install Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) onto the WinXP machines. Just a nicety, this enables the network map in Vista to show all machines on the network.

Ensure sharing is enabled on all machines. It is quite different for Vista vs WinXP. The procedure is fairly straightforward and is well documented on the MS site and elsewhere. In Network and Sharing Center it is critical on Vista machine that you have your network configured as Private and that the Sharing and Discovery Settings are set to ON except for Password Protected Sharing.
