Go back to the issuer and tell them the money order was "not used for the purpose intended." They have to refund the face amount (not the commission for writing the money order).

You have to go back to the place where you purchased the money order to get your money back. Normally, they will not refund fee you paid to purchase the money order and sometimes even charge you another fee. There should be a number on the money order for you to call with questions.

sign the back of the money like this Not for use intended, then sign your name
you must return it back to the place of purchase. Don't let them charge you for cashing it(some will try) you have already paid for it once.
