Are you especially interested in coffee shops? Maybe you should try Abraxas Coffeeshop, Jonge Roelensteeg 12-14, Amsterdam. It is in the centre. Also the Rokerij, one near the Amstel and one near the Central Station have good qualifications.
Do not rely on me, try the Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory. this gives the opinion of more than one person. Below
For bars you could look for the famous "brown bars". One is de smalleThe brown bar is a Dutch staple, an old-style drinking environment. It is very gezellig - meaning 'cosy' or 'home-like'. Basically you get beer, served typically in a weird glass, cheery red faced locals, canal-side seating, and not much more. I like cafe T'Smalle in a leafy bit of the Jordaan. But try the link below for more advice.
Other bars? Look at amsterdamtourist.com
Leave the chain stores aside, there are many nice places in Amsterdam. Have fun!

Go to Hunters' bar on the Woormenstracht which is the first road you get to walking past the grasshopper from the station. turn left and it is just up there on your left. Chilled place that is cheaper than the touristy joints and serves beer as well as all the various puff. I only ever go to the Grasshopper because they have a decent steak restaurant on the 3rd floor. You can have a huge T bone for €20. For a laugh, why not try the Amsterdam casino - just budget yourself first and take ID. If you want a nice and different meal experience - do the Supper club. Have fun - I'm envious!

I am extremely jealous. My advice is to just walk around and pop into the different shops. I really can't remember the names, but there were some good ones in and around Rembrandt Square. Also, don't forget to hit the Rijksmuseum. Preferrably after visiting a coffee shop. The big shops, like the bulldog and grasshopper, are way too touristy and always crazy busy. I like just exploring and popping into whatever shop is not busy and has many more locals. Sorry, I can't give you any specific names, but I hope this helps nonetheless. Enjoy your trip!

Hi there,
I gave these exact answers a week ago, so forgive me for not writing them again. It's my personal tip list and lots of my English mates were well happy with these, so hope you will be too.
By the way... if you're there the first week of August, there also is the Gay pride in Amsterdam canals (lots going on in the city) and Dance Valley (festival in Spaarnwoude) and Haarlem culinair (15 mins from Amsterdam, lots of cool restau's doing wine, champagne and food tatsting).
So here's the list:
Restaurants:
1) Supperclub, Amsterdam – eating on a huge bed / lounge style. Has been extremely hip and avant garde, now it’s just hip. Dj, sometimes dancers, the people who serve the food are an act itself (from midgets to tattooed models etc). / They also have a supperclub cruise behind the central station since two years. Quite funky and the food is quite good.
2) Lambermons, Haarlem: one of my personal fave’s although you have to go to Haarlem for it (15 min’s by train). A taste of haute cuisine and very unique. Each half hour they serve little plates which they serve every half hour.
3) Tower 11: very high building (floor 11) near central station, overlooking water and Amsterdam.
4) CP (Cinema Paradiso) – very nice, busy Italian place in The Jordaan (central Amsterdam) – chance to spot some Dutch celebs ;-)
5) Pasta e Basta (think it’s in the Elleboog Steeg, near Prinsen Gracht) – Very cool restaurant with singing waiters in between courses, not tacky, but really beautiful opera. Food is buffet from a piano or a la carte.
Bars & Clubs:
The More / Rozengracht
Supperclub - Coffeeshop Abraxas is right next to it
Club NL (next door to Supperclub) / Relaxed, people, sometimes really good dj’s.
Jimmy Woo / Leidseplein – hip, nice cocktail bar upstairs
The Factory – they’ve got cool club nights /
The Loveboat (1st Saturday of the month) / party boat with usually Eric E and Roog.
Hotel Arena / check the club nights (Hed Kandi has a night there every 3 months)
Tokyo Project (the new Hed Kandi: is a club night – might be on that weekend in a club)
Panama (nice to eat, drink, club nights)
Hope you have fun, enjoy!
