Is it safe to starch my white shirt collars and cuffs with the white starchy water left over from the rice I have boiled? The rice is long grained if that makes any difference? My shirts are really good and were expensive so I wouldn't want to risk ruining them.

Yes, actually.

But the results will be terrible as there is a lot of glutenous stuff in the resultant liquid.

If you pour it into the washing machine and wash the clothes in it, you get a better result but not a firm fabric.

But if your shirts were EXPENSIVE shell out the measly $2 it takes to buy proper starch.

It's not the 1930's !

The dry cleaners. No kidding, I just picked up some of my work shirts and they were so stiff I had to take them back home and wash the starch out. I added extra Downy and dryed with a softener sheet. They are STILL stiff. I can't even wear them like this, When I move my arms the shirt does not move with me! It just sits there stiff as a board.

Just buy starch water. If you are watching the pennies try the spray by Astonish cleaning products. It'll be a buck in anyone £1 store.

If your shirts are that expensive why aren't they sent to the cleaners? If they muck up your shirts then they have to replace them and having shirts laundered is not that expensive at all! And if you're a cutie, flirt with the lady behind the counter and get a great discount. It works for my brother all the time!

No - you will end up w/ a gummy mess.

Buy spray on starch for ironing - it's available @ most stores where household products are sold.
