My Betta fish has not being doing well at all for the past 2 weeks. She hasn't been eating anything lately, stays at the bottom of the tank or near the top, and she seems out of breath. Her mouth and gills open and close more rapidly than usual.
She is also swimming vertically (head up to surface, tail down towards gravel).
I am treating her with BettaFix Remedy, which the pet store guy said should treat any betta fish ailment, but I believe he is wrong.
What do you think is wrong with her and what treatment would be helpful?

She has no signs of Ich or Velvet.

Have you tried testing or changing her water? The rapid breathing would be a sign of too little oxygen in the water (shouldn't be a problem for a betta, though, since they have a labyrinth organ to breathe surface air), or too much ammonia or nitrite in the tank. Both have the symptom of gasping, lethargy, loss of appetite. I'd also check her water temperature to make sure it's not too hot or cold (75-85o would be about right). If none of these seem right, I'd suspect a gill parasite is making it hard for her to absorb oxygen.

i think water changes would be helpful if you aren't changing the water. i don't know how big your tank is but there might be stuff building up in the water from betta poop that is toxic to your fish. try changing about 1/2 the water and see if the betta gets any better.

Have you checked the ammonia levels? If they are high, which is highly likely in small tanks, then it could be causing serious problems for your fish. You should probably test that. Kits are cheap and so are ammonia removers. Also don't give your betta superfluous medicine because that stresses them out and could result in more serious problems.

Are there any abnormal things within the tank? My Betta does this every now and again and his cage just need to be cleaned. You may want to contact a Marine Biologist.

how old is your betta fish? unfortunately they don't live too long. sounds like he may be ready to go to the big fish tank in the sky. sorry. :( if age isn't a factor then contact a different fish store... petsmart, petco.... ask their advice. good luck.
