1/(y+1) + a = 3/(y+1)
=> 1 + a(y+1)= 3
=> 1+ ay + a = 3
=> ay = 2 - a
=> y =(2 - a)/ a
=> y =2/a - 1

Finding a:
(1 / [y + 1]) + a = 3 / (y + 1)
a = (3 / [y + 1]) - (1 / [1 + 1])
a = 2 / (y + 1)
Finding y based on value of a above:
a = 2 / (y + 1)
a * (y + 1) = 2
ay + a = 2
ay = 2 - a
y = (2 - a) / a
y = (a/2) - 1

OR

- (a/2) = - 1 - y
a/2 = 1 + y

OR

a = 0.5y + 0.5

1/(y+1) +a = 3/(y +1)
1 + a(y +1) = 3
1 + ay +a = 3
ay = 2 - a

y = (2 - a)/a or 2/a - 1

1 / (y+1) + a = 3 / (y+1)
Take all the 'y' terms one side,
+a = 3 / (y+1) - 1 / (y+1)
+a = (3-1) / (y+1) , because (y+1) is a common denominator
+a = 2 / (y+1)
Again, rearranging..
(y+1) = 2 / a
y = 2 / a - 1= 2/a - 1/1 = (2-a)/a = (2-a) / (a)... Ans.

yeah solve this equation for a to find what a is
a = 3/(y+1) - 1/(y+1)
a = 2/(y+1)
then solve it for y
cross multiply over the equal sign
so a(y+1) = 2
so ay+y = 2
so a(y+1) = 2
divide by a on both sides
y+1 = 2/a
now subtract -1 from both sides
y = 2/a -1
now simplify and combine 2/a and -1 to make one fraction
2/a stays 2/a, -1 becomes -a/a so combine the fraction 2/a - a/a is y = (2-a)/a

Multiply everything by y+1:

1 + a(y + 1) = 3
1 + ay + a = 3

Solving for y:

ay = 3 - 1 - a
y = (2 - a)/1

Solving for a:

a(y + 1) = 3 - 1
a = 2/(y + 1)

1/(y+1) + a = 3/(y+1)
1/(y+1) - 3/(y+1) = -a
-2/(y+1) = -a
-a (y+1) = -2
-ay -a = -2
-ay=-2 +a
y= (2-a)/a
