Nobody ever climbed the wall to sneak into East Germany. Nor did they need a wall to keep West Germans in. They weren't desperate to leave.
Any country ruled by anything but free elections is doomed to tyranny and oppression.
Government by appointment is asking for trouble. The people's ability to hire or fire their leaders is what keeps democracies healthy. If the government swings too far in one direction, the voters make adjustments in the polls and it swings back towards the center.
But giving government complete control over life is suicidal. It has never worked, and never will. The learning curve on people who seem unable to learn from history is staggering. And that includes most college professors.
Socialism works in fiction. In reality it will never work, because by and large, government is currupt, intrusive and ineffectivel. The government that governs least governs best.
But you have idiots running around acting like profit is evil. A company can pay me to write computer programs then pay taxes on me, while I pay $500 a week, all because of corporate profit, providing money to all these government programs, or we can tax companies more so they lay people off, leaving less people to pay taxes, more people who need government services, and less money for them.
The bottom line is, its better for companies to give people jobs and benefits than the government, which means taking it from taxpayers. Or continuing to build the 54 trillion debt the American government has put taxpayers in.

Let us look at history and learn from the experience of others.
The Soviet Union was the most powerful socialist nation in history. For those a little behind on current events they no longer exist. Where they invaded and conquered by an opposing army? No. Did a vast external conspiracy take them down? No. The people were given a taste of freedom and they threw off the yoke of socialism. Their example was qiuckly follwed by the people in the other eastern european countries. The Berlin wall was torn down and the people of East Berlin raced across to the capitalist West Germany.
So if socialism is so wonderful, why is it the people who lived under socialist regimes voted out those regimes as soon as they got the chance?
Still insist on the greatness of socialism? Take a look at North Korea. In North Korea everyone is entitled to food, health care, housing, and clothing. And 2 million people have starved to death in the past 10 years. Just in case you missed that I'll say it again. Under the socialist North Korean government everyone is entitled to food and 2 million people starved.
In American we have the freeist, most capitalistic system in history. We have 4% of the world's population and have turned out 90% of the world's inventions, books, music, art, and movies. We have the most advanced medicine and the best schools. People from every nation on the planet have tried to escape their situations by fleeing to America. A person on welfare in our extremely capitalistic society is more likely to have a car, a TV, a phone, has more square footage, and eats more meat than the average resident of Western Europe which is the second richest place on Earth.
So lets compare.
Socialism = Free health care, food, housing, and clothing = abject poverty and starvation
American capitalistic free enterprise = if you want something go out and earn it for yourself = the poorest of our poor are better off than the average person in the second wealthiest place on the planet.
I think I'll have to vote for capitalism

I would go with regulated capitalism. Prevent monopolies and trusts which are harmful to the economy, but for the most part let the free market decide what kind of economy we have. Capitalism is more free and open, but must have some boundaries to prevent the abuse of people solely for the maximization of profit.

Capitalism, because you have something to work for.
In socialism everyone makes the same amount of money, while capitalism you want to be as smart as possible so you can make a lot of money.

Economically I would prefer Capitalism, of course.
Socially I prefer socialism to a point. Not entirely but it has some good points. Yes we can have both.

Socialism would work great -IF you lived in a community of about 100. Much larger than that & it falls apart.
Any larger than that, you need capitolism.
