You have the correct spelling. These fish get fairly large, you may need a pond to spawn them. They don't like lots of water movement, but do like thick vegetation.

Of course, the obvious advice is to get a male and female. Since they can be sexed from external characteristics, this is easier to do with tench than some other species. Depending on size of the spawning area, you may want multiple fish, but although they lay a lot of eggs, the fish don't reach maturity until they're around 4 years old. So if you want them to spawn soon, you'll want to start with an older pair of fish (which usually increases their price).

trench. Pick up a breeding tank at the pet store. They are like two bucks and hang on the side of your aquarium. There is a false bottom that angles down so the live young will "fall" away from the parents, and not get eaten. Just put your extra prego live bearers in there. Once the babies are born take out the adult and remove the false bottom. The little guys will have a nice safe place to swim and grow.
