The United States funds basic medical research into alot of different areas.

Admitting im biased, because I have family members with cancer.

But the following, just doesn't seem right to me.

The US spends 21 billion a year on Aids research.
The US spends 4.7 billion dollars a year on Cancer research.

There are 400,000 americans with Aids.
There are 10,000,000 americans with Cancer.

There are 15,000 Aids related deaths each year in the US.
There are 500,000 Cancer related deaths each year in the US

Now it seems to me, we should be spending the 21 billion on Cancer and the 4.7 billion a year on Aids research.

Based on the number of people affected.

Yes, I know, we could be spending more on each.

But, shouldn't we be spending more on a diease that effects the most people ?

Im posting this in both the politics and health sections, since it deals with both issues.

NOTE:

The reason those two dieases are being used, is because they are the top two federal fund receivers .

I would tend to agree with you and the first answerer. Does the amount spent on AIDS also count measures aimed at preventing the disease, since the spread of AIDS is almost totally preventable? It would seem logical to spend more time, money, and resources to find a cure for cancer rather than a cure for AIDS. However, we should spend time, resources, and money to prevent the spread of AIDS.

I had no idea there was such a huge difference in numbers and thank you for pointing this out. I too have cancer in my family, on both sides.

Maybe it's because AIDS is a disease that can be spread from person to person?

Although I agree with you and have known a few good people that passed from cancer and none from AIDS, I think it is also the prevention of AIDS. I think more money goes in education and prevention than anything. Not all on the disease itself.

Cancer research should receive a far higher amount than AIDS research because far more people are going to get cancer over their lifetime.

Talk to the American Medical Association....their lobbyists do not want a cure for cancer, as they would lose billions in treatment costs.

my godfather died from cancer, my aunt has been battling cancer for 10+ years. i don't know anyone with HIV/AIDS.

AIDS can be prevented. Cancer comes in different forms from many sources, some unknown.

I'm with you, friend.
