Those freebies are great if you don't want to pay for a whole month when you're about to move out of your place . . . or likewise if you've just moved in and the f***ers haven't come yet, or are telling you that your phone line is to blame, not them.

When I used to live out in the country, the house was set back a little over a quarter mile from the road . . . and DSL still isn't available in all areas (even urban, if you can believe). So, the cable company wouldn't extend a line to the house, because any line they lay down, they want to own, the DSL people weren't available, and the only other game in town was satellite, which (as you can imaging having almost a complete monopoly) was prohibitively expensive. So, a second line with dialup always logged in was perfect. I'd go running around out in the orchard with the dog while I waited for pages to load! I miss that.

Just for comparison . . . it took me almost two weeks of mostly nonstop downloading to download the movie "Monsters Inc" in AVI format over the dialup connection. I'd pause it in my favorite P2P whenever I wanted to do something else online, then promptly start it again when I was done.

Not really a cute or funny question as there are a great number of people who do not have cable either because of price or unavailability in their area. I know this is probably hard for you to believe, but not everyone lives in or near a metropolitan area. They may have a phone but live too far from a central station to get DSL. Satellite requires a very high initial investment and the monthly charges are stiff also.
So don't make these people feel any worse than they already do, they probably want high speed but the reasons they don't are so varied that a true thinking person wouldn't even attempt to make fun of them or their situation.
I myself just got DSL. Tried to get the cable to run another 700' to my house for over 15 years, no luck and too expensive for me to foot the cost. Telephone company always said I lived too far away, finally had to almost bribe a telephone tech to actually measure the distance, come to find out I was more than close enough. Another 5 year battle. And satellite...too much initial money, high monthly cost and same reception problems as with satellite TV during bad weather.

I use the cable connection at work, but I still have dial-up at home. I want to upgrade, but...

1. We don't have cable in the area.

2. Satellite internet is too expensive.

3. I have checked with my ISP about wireless, but they haven't returned my question.

4. At & T says that they don't have high speed in my area.

I guess that's what I get for living in the boonies! :)

I have upgraded only recently, but I'll answer just to tell you why it took so long. The price of DSL (and cable TV and other such stuff) really ticks me off! For your average email message, a text message, which is about 90% of *my* email, dialup is just as good as DSL. The dialup ISP provided excellent uptime and tech support at one quarter the price, with no installed software, no added modem, no routers, phone numbers nationwide, ability to dial in with my pocket PC, and just about everything I needed!

The last time I used dialup was in the fall of 04 for 8 weeks, when I was going to film school CA, it was the only option affable to me.

I still use dial up, because I love to live in STONE-AGE. I like your picture as it also shows stone-age effects and reminds me of Tarzon.
