I have a problem with disrespecting other people. If Muslims don't want you to draw pictures of their prophet, then the logical and noble thing to do is not to upset them. Freedom of speech isn't only used for good its also used to incite racism, sexism, and homophobia remember that. There's a principle here that should be above free speech within an individual and that is the acknowledgment of other peoples humanity. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. -Till Christ Returns God Bless

The public library has some great sources. Check out several books and see what they have in common. They're free. Then practice practice practice. My drawings didn't strat getting better until I was required to draw at least eight hours a day for classes.

start by tracing a picture. try to develop your use of a pencil.
Then when you got the a bit of experince take a photo of someones head. Draw a grid on the picture like every half inch up and down, place a grid on the paper your going to draw on also. Then try to draw it with the skills you learnt tracing.
Then try to draw the same picture the same way only turn it up side down and draw it upside down also. This forces your brain to draw what you see, not what you think you see.

Hey,
If you want to discover the secrets of drawing realistic pencil portraits you really need to visit this site: http://pencilportraits.toptips.org
These drawing lessons, both throughly enjoyable and productive, go well beyond casual sketching: students learn to observe minutely the details of any given face, to see what is, and what is not, before them, and how to translate what they see into what are after all just pencil marks on paper.
I highly recommend it for both the experienced and the inexperienced artists alike.

Simple -just trace until your brain picks it up.
Try comic books, you get good dynamic use of space and the lines are clean.
That's how I started and I do great freehand today.
and do a lot of doodling.
Tracing is so surprising how fun it is too.
