Run it (the vinegar) through the steam function of the iron and all of the impurities will come pouring out of the iron. Do this over a sink and have a sponge at the ready. Use the hot vinegar coming out of the iron to continuously wipe the sole plate. The heat loosens deposits and the vinegar removes them. Double duty, you eliminate what causes the sole plate not to slide and the source of the ick on the sole plate in one fell swoop.

Besides running the vinegar thru the iron, use a plastic scrubbing pad [ ball ] to scrub off debris on the sole plate.
If it doesn't come off, scrub with soap and water, rinse well, and scrub with vinegar again.
