D) -2/5

1/3x + 1/5 = 1/15 (common denominator is 15 so you must multiply 3x by 5, 5 by 3 and 15 by 1, you get:)

5/15x + 3/15 = 1/15

5/x + 3 = 1

5/x = 1-3

x= -2/5

1/3x +1/5 = 1/15 Do you mean:
(1/3)x+1/5=1/15 multiply both sides by 15
5x+3=1 subtract 3 from each side
5x=-2 divide both sides by 5
x=-2/5=-0.4
d) -2/5 is correct

or did you mean:
1/(3x)+1/5=1/15 multiply both sides by 15x
5+3x=x subtract 5 from each side
3x=x-5 subtract x from each side
2x=-5 divide both sides by 2
x=-5/2=-2.5

None of the above so I assume you meant the first 1.

thus, 5x + 3 = 1
5x = 1 - 3 = -2
x = - (2/5)
