It seems like you picked Penn State because it's a State school, and as a Pennsylvania resident it is a little cheaper. Harrisburg isn't a bad city. You should go and check it out before you listen to what people tell you. But some of the other comments here about the distance is true for the main Penn State campus. The main campus is in State College, PA. I have been to State College, PA, and I was very impressed. Penn State does have a campus in Harrisburg. It's 9 miles south of Harrisburg in a suburban town called Middletown, PA. This should be even better than Harrisburg itself. So, go and check it out. I think it will be a great place to do everything; attend school, work, and raise a family. If you decide to settle in Harrisburg or Middletown, you will be in driving distance of Hershey, PA, Hershey Park, and Hershey Chocolates, Pennsylvania Dutch Country in Lancaster, PA, the Outlets in Reading, PA, and Oaks, PA, Crystal Cave, The Pocono Mountains (great for skiing), Valley Forge, PA with all of its historical sites, and the nearby King of Prussia Mall in King of Prussia, PA, and your choice for entertainment. There are casinos in Bethlehem, PA, Chester, PA, Bensalem, PA, if you don't want to shoot down to the Jersey shore to check out Atlantic City's Casinos.

All of the cities have nice suburbs. I grew up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh and really enjoyed it. Because of the rivers and Mt. Washington, you are seperated from the city and would never know it was there... but then it's just a ride over a bridge away! I know Philly also has nice suburbs like West Chester. Good Luck.

I am fond of and moving to the West Shore - near Harrisburg, PA. The cities of Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, Marysville.
They are close enough to Harrisburg for work, but not IN Harrisburg. Good schools. Affordable.
