Somebody ought to keep tabs on how many questions a day the question (Looking for a good book) is asked...Say, you got any good books to read? Classics are the best - I loved Thomas Hardy (already finished all of the best-known of his books), Mark Twain, Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, Sherlock Holmes, Kipling's Captains Courageous, and Dickens's Oliver Twist, and some. Suggestions are warmly, warmly welcomed!

Hello...

There is a great list of "suggested classics" with short reviews that looks right up your alley. You can find it at http://www.tolkien-online.com/classic-reading-suggestions.html

Excellent taste, by the way. I absolutely love Hardy, Twain, and Dickens. You should try Tolstoy, Sir Walter Scott, Chekov, William Golding, Oscar Wilde, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Vladimir Nabokov. All fantastic writers.

In regards to "modern classics" (in my opinion), check out:
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
Possession by A.S. Byatt
The Name of the Rose & The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Eco
An Instance of the Fingerpost by Ian Pears

Happy Reading!

Widen your scope now beyond Brit/Amer writing. Go eastern to Russia and slide back in time to 19Th and grab Pushkin, Gogol, Tolstoy, go upstream the Seine and get Flaubert and Balzac. go amazon and get Joao Guimares Rosa. do not just fly past the Caribbean.there are classics there too like Roger Mai's, lamming. in other words, read authors from other parts of the world now if you want to try new/fresh experience.
