Ok, so my husband was driving home one night when our truck died. now for some time (since like oct of '06) we had to manual start the truck where i would literally rock it from N to 1 to start it without push starting. which was rather irritating. Well, the night the truck gave out, my father in law went to get my husband, and they said while trying to start the truck, flames got spit out from the muffler i believe. Well, the other day we had to move it, and the key didnt start the truck obviously, but the radio came on, saying to me, battery isnt dead, but i need to figure out whats wrong, we looked at the timing belt, but it didnt appear lose it was acctually really tight, and the owner before us said they changed the belt but didnt time it, which we found apparent when everytime we went up a hill, the truck went from the 60's to the 20's...not so fun....anyways, if anyone thinks they know whats wrong, please let me know, and also, where can i find an owners manual online????

Backfiring flames through the muffler means unburned fuel in the exhaust system, most likely caused by faulty timing and your slowing down from 60 to 20 on hills confirms this.

A tight belt means the belt is tight. It does not mean anything else.

The engine will not run properly until the timing is set correctly, and nothing else you do will help in any way until this is done..

Timing is not covered in an owner's manual. It should be done by a mechanic.

The radio needs so little power that it will work even if the battery is on its last minutes of life, so it cannot be used to tell the battery condition.

If you live in an area where it gets below freezing, and the battery was not kept charged through the entire winter, it is will probably have frozen and if so it is almost certainly finished. Thawed batteries may look OK but they will not hold a full charge and you have to replace them.

Well it sounds like it could be the mass air meter or a bad coil or spark plug wires. The battery might have enough juice to run the radio but thata it. I would get the battery tested, if it tests good and it doesnt evin try to turn over than it is your starter or clutch interlock switch or a bad relay or fuse. If it does turn over but doesnt start than i would pull out the sparl plugs and see if they are wet with gass if they are than you are getting fuel & it is an ignition problem. If they are not wet and look totally dry than you could have a bad fuel filter or fuel pump. When you cycle the key on to the run position have someone stand back by the fuel tank and listen if they hear the fuel pump kick on, it will be a slight wineing noise. If you hear that than the pump is atleast workin enough to start it.
If it tries to start and only a few plugs are wet and some dry it is a coil pack or spark plug wire. good luck
