I think it depends on the body in question. I for one have to down at least 8 ounces of grilled chicken before I race or train anything over two miles or else I get hungry and lose momentum. I am also a trained endurance athlete who's been swimming competitively since age 8 so my body is used to it.

Some people get cramps and some people don't. It all depends on how your body reacts to the intensity of the swim while trying to digest.

strenuous exercise of any kind can cause side cramps if done soon after eating, swimming seems to be the worst. i have struggled with this my whole life. i must eat at least an hour before my swim workout, or i will get side cramps. if i need energy before a workout and i haven't had a meal in a while, i can normally get by with a sugary energy drink without getting a cramp, something my body can absorb quickly.

other than that, i agree with some of the others here. it's a myth and our mothers are simply being over-cautious.

It's an old wive's tale; my mom used to do that to us back in the 60s. The great majority of your food is still in your stomach after an hour; it won't matter a bit if you go swimming immediately after eating, or an hour later.

Well I swim just about every day of my life and in my oppinion, eating before swimming doesnt have a negative effect on me and doesnt on most people, I do it all the time.

I swim everyday. Unless you have a sensitive stomach, eating right before you swim leisurely is normally fine. But I would not reccomend, stuffing yourself then swimming lap after lap or racing. That could really make you feel sick.

Whenever I swim after I eat, I usually NEVER get cramps. Sometimes, not always, my stomach hurts really badly at night when I go to bed, but NEVER after I get into the pool.

It depends on how strenuous you're going to swim. If you're just frolicking eating won't matter. If you're sprinting laps it could make you puke.
