Let's stick with the Bolsheviks, as they were the pioneers in the effort to make Russia communist.
The Bolsheviks despised the peasants, whom they saw as superstitious ignorant fools. One of their earliest slogans, "Bread and Land," was designed to appeal to the peasants, and it did. But the Bolsheviks had no intention of actually letting anyone own land - that was the State's prerogative. All means of production were owned by the state - you bet they were. It's interesting that communist and socialist propaganda around the world trumpeted the right of the working class to go on strike. Once the Bolsheviks got into power, striking was the same as treason. Bolsheviks also made it illegal to be out of work, which meant that if you got fired you could go to prison for 10 years to a labor camp which you may or may not survive. The Bolsheviks planned to eliminate class distinctions by killing everyone who wasn't part of the working class or the peasantry, but they found they still needed factory managers who had better benefits than ordinary workers. The effort to have a classless society was the first casualty of the Revolution.
