no, 512 is nowhere near enough for vista, u need at least 2 gigabytes, vista uses close to 700 mb of ram alone, i would get 2 gigs for future proof purposes (it will cost u about 7 dollars more). You could upgrade the ram yourself and buy it much cheaper at a site like newegg.com , it sounds like you don't know too much about computers and I would recommend getting a mac (idiot proof) for your needs. check out a cheap macbook, runs for 999 with education discount.

512MB is nowhere near enough memory for Vista running on a laptop. 2GB should be considered the minimum memory configuration for a Vista configured laptop. I would definitely upgrade, try web sites like crucial first to see if they are cheaper then whoever you are buying the laptop from. Have you purchased your laptop yet, if not what brand are you considering, as some are more reliable then others (such as Apple and IBM/Lenovo).

512mb is enough to do your basic office applications (word) and run iTunes and surf the net. You really only need more memory if you are using programs that do a lot of 3D generated graphics or you plan to run many programs at the same time, but to just surf, listen to music and run MS office 512 mb is plenty

512 mb will run vista ,but performance will suck now i'm running vista ultimate with 1 gb of ram and it works fine. From what i have heard and seen 512 will run home basic (the lowest version) fairly well.

XP uses 368 megs of memory... vista uses even more. You need to upgrade to at least 1 gig of memory... 2 gigs is even better. The rest should be fine :)

Hi,

In case you are planning to use Microsoft Windows XP as OS, you may go ahead with 512MB of RAM, however is the OS is Microsoft Windows VISTA, then you will need a minimum of 1024MB(1GB) of RAM for optimal performance.

Vista from what I've learned would probably run better with 1 GB of ram or more.. and there are relatively inexpensive systems floating around with that much RAM

No they recommend at least 1GB for vista. Check Dell or HP.
