Not necessarily. Anybody can be a dental hygienist if he/she wants to be. Otherwise, it would be discrimination.

Hey...... if you like the potential pay and benefits go for it! Women drive trucks and do many other things and don't let your buddies kid you, it may be a better paying job than they have, with a warm, friendly environment with pretty-good benefits (not to mention many pretty girls coming and going through your chair or as your coworkers), so you can laugh your way to the bank and work in any city or town in the world with good, clean working conditions! Don't let other people run your life. That's like saying that a male nurse or an orderly at the hospital is a sissy too, but they bring home the bacon and live a quality life compared with alot of he-man grunt-work! Ha Ha Ha! LOL

In my hygiene program we had 3 guys and 24 girls. The Dental Hygiene Association actually encourages guys to go into the field by offering scholarships just for them.
Go for it, it's a great field!

In my experience, they most often are women, but I've run into a few that were male. I remember two when I was in the Army who were male soldiers. No reason a male can't do the job.

No I have seen my share of male dental assistants too. It is just like having male and female nurses.
