7 answers

Completing the square

2(x - 6) + x² = 0

2x - 12 + x² = 0

convert to standard form

x² + 2x - 12 = 0

x² + 2x - 12 + 12 = 0 + 12

x² + 2x = 12

x² + 2x +_____= 12 +_____

x² + 2x + 1 = 12 + 1

(x + 1)(x + 1) = 13

(x + 1)² = 13

(√x + 1)² = ± √13

x + 1 = ± √13

x + 1 - 1 = - 1 ± √13

x = - 1 ± 3.605551275

- - - - - - - - -

Solving for +

x = - 1 + 3.605551275

x = 2.605551275

- - - - - -

Solving for -

x = - 1 - 3.605551275

x = - 4.605551275

- - - - - - - - -s-

2(x-6)+x2 = 0
2x - 12 + x^2 =0
x^2 + 2x + 1 = 12 + 1
(x+1)(x+1) = 13
(x+1)^2 = 13
sqr [(x+1)^2] = sqr (13)
x+1 = sqr (13)
x= (sqr13) - 1

You get an expression, x^2 + 2x - 12, which unfortunately doesn't factor easily. That's all you can do, unless it is equal to something. Then you could possibly factor it, or use the quadratic formula.
