I have a fan tail goldfish, and I would just like to know how to tell?

You can only tell when they're mature (at least a year old) and in spawning condition. The most reliable characteristics are that a male will get breeding tubercles, which look like small pimples, on the coverings overs the gills and along the front edges of the side fins. There's also a difference in the shape of the vent at this time. This website has photos of what to look for: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm
