I have the I have a Murray riding mower and when I start it up after jumping it, it dies when I release the clutch. I have jump started it to use it for the first time since last year. It will run after I jumpstart it but will not restart w/o jumper cables attached to running power. It will run until I release the clutch to go either forward or backward.

It sounds as if you may have dried grass up under the deck that is causing blades to be too hard to turn and this puts added load on the clutch plate that engages the blades. I bought a set of car ramps and periodically drive the mower(blades off) up on these ramps. Then a get a flat bar and a putty knife and clean all the dried grass off of the underside of the deck. I mow 4 acres and it requires me cleaning the deck at least once every time i mow. This keeps the discharge system working well and takes a lot of wear and abuse off the clutch system. I also take a air blow gun that runs off air compressor and blow off dried loose grass from around the top of the deck where belts and spindles are. You also might have a belt that has become tangled up or shredding and is catching on the pulleys. You could also have a bearing going bad on one or more of the spindles. Start with an inspection of the underside of the mower deck and then inspect the belts. Something is putting too much of a load on the motor.

It is possible that something is binding up or frozen after the winter rest it had. Make sure everything is free and then let the engine warm up a little. If it still gives you problems then start looking for the defect. Some safety switch possible.

its probably either the safety switch located under the seat, or the switch that tells it that the blades are engaged... probably the one under the seat, that kills the engine if you get off the seat... these go bad pretty often..
