Think of the stuff you can buy with the money you will make by selling the stuff you put in the garage sale. Also, look at it like the items you are selling are finding a new home where someone else will treasure and enjoy them as much as you did. This always helps ease the pain of shedding items for me.

Start with the things that you haven't touched or thought of in a long-long time. Or think about down-sizing. Do you REALLY need a place setting for 24 for example or would a table setting for 8 be enough. Coffee mugs muliply and if you only use 2, then keep a few extra for company and get rid of the rest. You might enjoy that troll doll that you have had since you were a kid, but does it really add anything to your decor. Start slowly and then pretty soon the stuff that you really don't need will find their way out to the yard sale tables.

Money can be made with the yard sale - but personally I hate the time and preparation. Money isn't that much of a deal for me, so I usually find a local 'freecycle' board and give the stuff away. If you just don't want to see your once-treasured items walking down the driveway in someone else'e hands - consider donating them to a local church or re-sale shop and go home feeling great: you have all that extra room, less clutter, and you have helped someone else less fortunate than yourself.

Best way is to get someone else to stay there and sell it for you while you go to the movie or something.
Or go in with several other people having a yard sell. Let them handle selling your stuff!

1] think how much more room you'll have
2] plan ways to spend the money
3] donate all leftover items to a charity - you can feel good about that, too!

If you haven't used it or worn it for a year, then it is time to part with it.
