depending on the cover composite - leather looking use hairspray and gently rub it out, if it's a paper cover, like book binding cloth, you want to be very careful, cuz the paper is held together with an adhesive, I would use a small amount of acetate and use a q-tip to rub it awa. If you clarify ywhat the surface is .... the answer could be more specific.

If it is a hard cover you can spray a little WD40 oil on it. Let it set for about 15-30 seconds then wipe it off. The ink should come off.

Try rubbing alcohol first - that's the solvent in Sharpies.
