'85 Bears. They were 18-1, crushed the LA Rams and G-Men in the playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl, and won 46-10 against New England. Watch the '72 Dolphins in Super Bowl VII. No one can argue how good they were. But whoever was the QB for Washington threw a perfect pass headed for the endzone. That was when the goalposts were at the goalline. The ball hit the upright. Would've tied the game. Also, everyone knew Da' Bears would win Super Bowl XX. They made the Super Bowl Shuffle BEFORE they were EVEN IN THE SUPER BOWL!!!! The Dolphins were actually underdogs in Super Bowl VII. If you say '72 Dolphins, you're not stupid, but they got kind of lucky. Also, they won the Super Bowl by 7 points. Not 36.
Other Notables:
3. '89 Niners: 55-10 crushing against the Broncos, biggest Super Bowl win ever
4. '92 Cowboys: 52-17 victory against Buffalo, but should've been 59-17 (Leon Lett).

Well, you can hate me all you want....... I was a HUGE fan of the 70s Steelers and a HUGE fan of Montana and the 49ers, but man for man there was no better SB team than the Chicago Bears. There is no other team in the history of football that could have beaten that team. Not Lombardi's Packers, not Noll's Steelers, not Walsh and Montana's 49ers, not Landry nor Johnson's Cowboys not Elway, Belichick or Manning!
If their offense hadn't sucked so bad that year, the '86 SB would have ended 65-3 !
(the BEST Offense in SB history couldn't have scored 17 points against those guys.....)

ADVANTAGES
OFFENSE: Bears. While Larry Csonka is in HOF, the Bears had one of the greatest RBs in the history of the NFL in Walter Payton. They also had a World Record/Olympic quality sprinter at WR named Willie Gault, who was more than capable of blowing past any DB the Dolphins could throw at him. Gault at one time held the 4x100 meter relay World Record. Nobody on the Dolphins Defense could hope to match his speed, and Jim McMahon would know that. Walter Payton was also NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
DEFENSE: Bears. There is simply no comparison here, the 85 Bears were the best statistical defense in the entire history of the NFL, and would be facing a far less talented offense than the Dolphins defense would be. Oh, Mike Singletary was also named NFL Defensive Player of the Year. And, then there is the style of defense the Bears ran in 1985. Buddy Ryan's 46 Defense in 85 was the greatest defense the NFL has ever fielded. It also didn't exist in 1972, so there is absolutely no way the Dolphins would be able to prepare for it. The coaches wouldn't know it, the players wouldn't know it. You cannot expect to play well against a defense you have never seen before.
COACHING: Bears. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage the Dolphins would have comes in coaching. While Miami coach Don Shula retired as the winningest coach in NFL history, he would be limited to what he knew about the NFL in 1972, and would not be prepared to handle the changes in the game made between then and 1985. First, Mike Ditka would be able to watch the game film and plan for the Dolphins, as he would have access to the NFL archival footage from 1972. Don Shula however, would not in 1972, be able to study the game film of the 1985 Bears. Basically, the Bears would have a huge advantage, if only for already having access to the Dolphins season, by virtue of playing later. The Bears coaches would be capable of much more indepth game planning than the Dolphins would, because while the Bears have seen what the Dolphins bring, the Dolphins would not have seen what the Bears bring.
Finally, the undefeated thing is way overblown. The Dolphins won 17 games, the Bears won 18. The 1934 and 1942 Bears also went undefeated, as did the 1948 Cleveland Browns, so its not really as unique as people think.

Actually, the two greatest teams faced each other twice in the 70's: Steelers and Cowboys.
I'm a Cowboys fan but the Steelers were just a little better. No other Super Bowl can compare to the two those teams played unless you count the Colts victory over the Cowboys.
It's a shame that the Steelers who went to 4 Super Bowls have twice as many players in the Hall of Fame as the Cowboys who went to five Super Bowls in the 70's.

Well I'm sorry that you are going to hate me but the answer is 1985 Bears.
1) 2nd best defense in league history (the 1986 Bears defense was better - check the stats and listen to the Bear players themselves!)
2) Best runner ever - (yes I know Emitt had more yards but he has said that he stayed around to beat the record. Payton crushed the record and he played several years with a horrible offensive line)
3) Highest point differential in playoffs ever
4) 18-1 against a much tougher schedule than the 1972 Dolphins 16-0 perfect team faced.
They were a fantastic team. It's just a shame that Ditka was an idiot who constantly bickered with Buddy Ryan and Jim McMahon.which eventually destroyed the team. They could easily have won 3 Super Bowls had they not self-destructed!

1989 San Francisco 49ers
Elway never had a chance.
49ers finished 14-2 and gain homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Their two losses were by a combined 5 points. In the first round, they crushed the Vikings, 41-13. In the NFC Championship game, they blew out the Los Angeles Rams 30-3 before crushing the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV - setting a record for points scored and widest margin of victory in a Super Bowl, amongst others. Montana himself set many Super Bowl records (some since tied or surpassed) en route to his third Super Bowl MVP. In winning the Super Bowl, the 49ers became the only team to win back-to-back Super Bowls under different head coaches. This 1989 championship squad is often regarded as one of the most dominant teams ever, winning all three playoff games by a combined 100 points.

you would be 100% correct the 1985 Bears were and are still are the Greatest team to ever play in the NFL. Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, Dan Hampton, William Perry (the fridge), Richard Dent, I could go on forever on how great this team is.
