Dogs can't eat to much of it. I would definitely keep your puppy out of the cat food. My neighbor use to bring his dog over and it would love to have a little treat from my cat food dish, but I think the cat food has some sort of vitamin, i think protein, or something that isn't good for dogs if they have too much of it. I don't remember exactly, but if you want to keep your puppy healthy, move your cat's food, so he doesn't get in it.

Add on:
Eating cat food probably won't hurt your dog, though it's best that he doesn't eat it all the time. Cats and dogs require different diets. Cats are pure carnivores, meaning they typically eat nothing but meat, while dogs are omnivorous, meaning that they eat some plant materials along with their meat.

Cat diets are made primarily of meat and meat products, so in the long run they can be too rich for dogs and can cause digestive problems. They are also denser in calories than dog diets, so they can lead to obesity in dogs. Because of the additional fat and calories, cat food often tastes better to dogs than dog food does, so you may have to keep an eye on your dog to make sure he doesn't indulge in the kitty kibbles.

By the way, while cat food is generally okay for dogs, dog diets lack essential nutrients that cats need to stay healthy, so cats can't live on dog food. Overall, it's safest to feed your pets the kind of food formulated to be healthiest for their specific species. (Ferrets may be the exception. They are the only pets other than cats that are entirely carnivorous, which is why ferrets can live on cat food.)

ANOTHER SOURCE: The rule goes...dogs need dog food...cats need cat food. The reason is, cats need a higher protein level in their diet. This protein level is too high for dogs and will cause bladder/kidney stones in dogs. If your dog nibbles cat food here and there and vise versa, it should cause no harmful problems. But they both need to eat their individual food for wellness and longevity.

Cat food has more salt and fat in it than dog food (even the dry variety), so in a matter of speaking, if cat food is all your puppy eats, it CAN affect his kidneys later. Cat food also has added nutrients like Taurine which dogs really don't need, at least in the amounts that the cats do. The same for cat treats.

We have three dogs and five cats, and we ended up placing the cat feeder in our laundry with a baby gate blocking the lovable lugs from inhaling the cat food, which as I'm sure you noticed, is also more expensive than dog food. We also had to place the litter boxes there, too, as ALL DOGS, for some unknown reason, also think that cat poo is the Very Best Treat Around.

Try feeding the puppy a decent-to-good quality puppy food (I use Science Diet for mine), and get it in the 'small bites' size-kibble, which might also be easier for your puppy to chew.

Cat food is bad for puppies. Don't let him eat it. Cats are pure carnivores that eat mostly protein. Dogs don't process that much protein.

When puppies eat too much protein, it puts a strain on their kidneys as they try to process it (this is true with people who eat too much protein). Cat food will get your puppy sick.

Kidney Stones happen when the animal is dehidrated. Cat food tends to be salty. Cats can deal with the salty flavor but other animals have a tough time. The body then triggers the mucass to wet the salt. As long as its non salty its fine!

Not true, though it should not be his regular food or his steady diet. Cats and dogs have different nutritional needs. Also, when dogs have drastic changes in their diet, they tend to digestive upset.
