Are they strictly "spring bloomers?"

They will not bloom again until next spring. Also be sure you plant the "rhizomes" slightly above the ground; the rhizomes need direct sun to encourage the plant to bloom. The iris won't fall over; the rhizome will sent out roots to anchor it into the ground. You may mulch around iris to conserve moisture, but don't cover the rhizome with mulch. You have made an excellent choice. Iris are beautiful plants.

Hmmm. Are you sure you planted Irises? They area root that sends up a tall stalk 3' or so and then blooms. I have never heard of anyone planting them in a bloomed stage. It seems like they are always planted as a root cutting.
Anyway, to answer your questions, yes, irises only bloom once each year. This is one reason I don't plant them. They bloom and then leave their spiky leaves the rest of the season that I don't care for. Some people like them for background planting so the tall leaves give a backdrop effect and then plant shorter annuals or perennial flowers in front. I however, just don't bother with them. It is kind of the same problem people have with lilacs. They are beautiful, but bloom once and then are done after a short time.

Irises only bloom in late spring for a short time. There are a few varieties you can get that will re-bloom in the fall.

They were already blooming they only bloom once each year.

yea, they are finished but you can still enjoy the foliage and look forward to more blooms next spring.
