Eric, you defined homophobia well. It's the fear that they've 'thought about it' or 'might like it'. It's sad to see people hiding behind excuses for hating people.
Unfortnately I totally disagree with your presumption that it's a liberal/conservative thing. I'm liberal, and believe me, there are plenty of homophobes in both parties.

I'm not a Conservative, but I admit, I am deathly afraid of homosexuals. I'm afraid that if I shake hands with one, I might catch it. I'm constantly washing my hands. I installed a special head-to-toe peephole on my door, so I can get a good look at whoever is knocking; if they are wearing Sperry Topsiders with no socks, I just don't answer the door. I once was in an antique store and saw a guy with a sweater tied around his neck, and when he said something was "marvy!" I ran out as fast as I could. I won't let my children watch The Flintstones because the theme song has the tag line "We'll have a gay old time."
Okay, enough parody of you. The whole world will be better off when you realize you don't know much about how other people think, and stop thinking the world will be better off when everyone does everything your way. Personally, I think it would probably suck.

I am a conservative and I am not afraid of gays and lesbians. That said, I still believe marriage should be between and MAN and a WOMAN. As far as public displays of affection, I don't like to have to see heterosexuals all over eachother, so why on earth would I want to see homosexuals?
I also don't appreciate the lifestyle being thrown in my face. I don't promote the fact that I am hetero on a regular basis. If gays want more acceptance then they need to lighten up on the flamboyance.
And just for your information, I am HAPPILY heterosexual, and my boyfriend will attest to that...if you know what I mean.

I'm a social conservative, and I'm not frightened of homosexuals or bisexuals.
Being conservative has nothing to do with anything. Neither does religion. Some religious people have problems with homosexuality, others don't. Some conservatives have problems with homosexuality, others don't.
Stop generalizing. I don't approve of the lifestyle, but who am I to tell them how to live their life?

Conservatives are not any more frightened by gays than liberals are by Christians.
I am conservative and am not frightened by gays. However, I have no problem saying that homosexuality is unnatural and wrong.
Comparing sexual orientation to race is extremely ignorant and a disservce to minorities everywhere. You can't choose your race, yet you can choose whether or not to live a homosexual lifestyle. Just like a heterosexual can choose to be faithful to his wife.

I'm a conservative. And I am not 'frightened' of them. I just don't care for their life style. They don't care for mine. So I'd say we are even. It's a matter of choice.
I don't care for whole tomatoes either. Does that make me afraid of tomatoes? If you like tomatoes that doesn't make me afraid of you. Don't assume because someone doesn't like something they are automatically afraid.
I figure over time if being homosexual is a genetic aberration it will die out. If it isn't people will finally wake up and figure out it is a psychological problem. Either way it won't bother me.
Sorry that didn't elicit the extreme response you wanted. But I don't get upset with what others do.

I generally vote conservative and I have absolutely no problem with anyone's sexual orientation. I personally don't see how it is anyone's business.
I am not big on public displays of affection from anyone in terms of heavy making out or groping each other - but most people tend to outgrow that once they leave the teen years behind.
I think we should keep our noses out of each other's lives unless their activities somehow endanger us as a whole. (If your neighbor is hiding bodies, I don't care if he is gay or not..)
I truly do not understand why people feel the need to pass judgement on others in this fashion. It baffles me. Just a case of ignorance same as racism.
Please know that not all conservatives are like this and I do apologize for the idiots you've come into contact with. Also, not all conservatives are Christian either.
* I don't feel we deserve to be stereotyped as a group any more than people who are homosexual deserve to be. *

Yaaaaaaaawn.
I'm not. You have a perverse generalization with ultra-conservatives (i.e., "religious right").
I have a gay uncle and a gay brother in law and strangely, I treat them as they are: Uncle Bill and Bruce. Good try though buddy.

Makes ya wonder why every liberal state in america, banned gay marriage.
if its a conservative issue.
Did all those conservatives in Mass, get together and ban gay marriage, so the Mass courts could overturn the law ?
Or was it Mass liberals who banned gay marriage?
Only one anti gay federal law has ever been passed.
the defense of marriage act
And guess what president signed it ?
Clinton.
Since 73% of americans are against gay marriages.
Doses that mean 73% of americans are conservative ?
