A good species of snails to keep with goldfish are apple (mystery) snails. Both like cooler water temperature than tropical fish. And the snail will help eat some algae, and it will eat the fish food as well - just be careful you aren't putting too much food in the tank.

Hi, I run the pet dept at Walmart in my hometown. Yes you can put snails in with goldfish. They get along just fine. You do not have to supplement the snail, because it will eat what ever waste the goldfish produces. They dont necessarily clean the tank to perfection. It will crawl around eating what it finds.
Limit how much you feed your fish and your tank should remain clear. Only give your fish one small pinch a day, do not follow the guidelines on the fish food container. Way too much is what they call for. Also if you have a filter on the tank, if you change your filter every two weeks, your water will remain clear!...mine does :)
One more thing about snails.....they do sleep........for up to 4 years at a time!! so if you do not see your snail move, dont assume that its dead. Look at the opening of the shell, if the hard plate cover is closing the hole it is fine, but if the hard plate is missing your snail is dead.
Good luck!!

i bought a snail at the pet store. after having it a few days i noticed a bunch of baby snails. the adults do not have to have a mate to have babies. they produce all on their own. also, they produce alot of waste. but they do get along well with the gold fish. take care
