If there is a runner on first and another player gets a hit, the runner on first starts to advance to second, dose the second baseman have to touch the base to get a double play?

Several people have answered that the runner can be tagged instead of the base, which is true. But I think you may have meant something else with this question. You may have noticed that many times on a double play the second baseman (or shortstop, whoever happens to cover second at the time) doesn't actually step on the base.

Technically, the base should be touched. However the umpires usually give some slack to the fielders, and as long as he gets near or over the base they'll give him credit for the out. The reason for this is to avoid injuries from a runner sliding into second.

It doesnt have to be the second baseman. It can be anybody that covers the base including the Short Stop and Pitcher. Also to get a double play the ball can be caught and thrown to first to get the runner for not tagging up.

No, the 2nd baseman can either touch the base for the force out or tag the runner advancing from 1st and then throw to 1st to get the other force out.

No the second baseman can tag the runner going from 1st to 2nd. BUT... if he throws the ball to the 1st base first, than you MUST tag the runner going to 2nd.

If the runner never touched second base, then he can still be "forced" out..but in order to get the double play they need to get the batter who got the hit out meaning tagging him off the base..when you say the batter got a hit, i assume he already touched first base

No, the secondbaseman can tag the runner out (assuming the ball is hit to him) and throw to first to complete the double play.

He has to either tag the base or the runner to get an out.

He also has to get the ball to first before that runner arrives to get the other out.

For a double play, Any fielder (usually 2B or SS) who gets the ball must touch the base or tag the runner before the throw to first , or else it is called a fielders choice.
