I see all these "Am I pregnant?" "Can you get pregnant from so & so?" and the topper "How do people get pregnant?" At least once a year since 4th my son has brought home a permission slip for the sex-ed program. Something tells me it's not working very well. Anyone agree?

Just wanted to add that I always decline the sex-ed programs for my sons. They are being taught by my husband and I, on an age appropriate level. Since I am pregnant, and they are 9 and 11 we have had some interesting conversations lately! :-)

I think parents need to be honest and communicate with their children about sex. I often wonder why these kids are coming to the pregnancy forum to ask questions.

Anyways...I agree with you 100% about these ridiculous questions!

it's not just the school's problem. I agree that sex needs to be talked about in the home. Some schools do not have a lot of control though. I am a teacher and depending on the school district, some only will teach abstenance and that safe sex is no sex. These schools need to wake up and and get with a real world, but it is not just the schools, but community support as well is necessary to change the programs. Many community members are against talks of birth control and STDs, the just don't think their kids would do that!

i agree! Either these children are really young, or the sex-ed program is not doing it's job. Kids learn more from other kids and probably know more than the teacher. It truly is up to the parents to make sure our children are well educated on the birds and the bees. I don't trust any teacher or school to teach my child everything. It is my job to instill moral values in my child and i feel sex falls in that area, other than the pure science of it. Is that teacher going to teach the emotional stigma that goes along with sex? I don't think so, so why even teach it if you are not going to cover all the bases?

The archaic public education system mixed with adult themes in children's programming on television lead to what you're seeing.

Don't fire the teachers, assign sex-ed teaching to the teachers who would be most comfortable teaching it and update the curriculum to contain accurate, easy-to-understand information. Also, most schools break classes up by gender to teach sex ed. I think regardless of that, it needs to be taught to small groups of students. Say 5 - 8 at a time.

Yes! All those questions make me want to scream. Although I can really understand what's happening, because I remember how completely horrendous my sex-ed class was. I didn't learn a thing, so I don't know why I'm surprised that no one else does either.

I think a good bit of the responsibility lies with the parents as well. Sex ed obviously isn't cutting it.

Judging by the spelling of most of those posts, though, I would speculate that many of the girls didn't make it to fourth grade, or at least didn't pay attention in class...

I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU.
THERE ARE TWO THINGS THAT ARE NOT WORKING....
PARENTS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW UP OR DISCUSS WITH THEIR CHILDREN ANYTHING THEY LEARNED IN THE SEX ED CLASS ....THEY KEEP THE SUBJECT OF SEX TABOO AND EXPECT THE SCHOOL TO DO THE ENTIRE JOB THAT ACTUALLY SHOULD BE 90% THE JOB OF THE PARENTS.
THE SECOND THING?? IT ISN'T THAT IT IS TAUGHT INCORRECTLY, BUT THAT MANY TIMES THE HORMONAL TEEN IS NOT LISTENING OR BELIEVES IT DOES NOT APPLY TO THEM OR THEY ARE NOT DUMB ENOUGH TO LET IT HAPPEN TO THEMSELVES.

Yes, but I beleive it is the parents responsibility and mine will be taught by me, being their private Christian school does not teach it anyway! I had them and my husband and I are responsible for their education as well as Life's education!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
