I'm writing a book and the main characters need to destroy a building filled with vampires. I have them breaking into an excavating company's warehouse and stealing 3 sticks of dynamite. My question is, how do they like, set it off? Should i just be vague and say "they set it up" or something? I tried to google around but I can't find anything and I'm afriad to dig too deep because it could be a touchy subject..

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

you read my mind xuserx2000. in fact, you are quite right. it is going to go wrong, the vampires are going to find out, and two main characters (doubling as love interests for the two other main characters) are going to die. it's going to be a high intensity moment XD

You could use detonating cord...

connected to a blasting cap...

which is placed in one of the sticks of dynamite...

That would give you the realism you're looking for.

Dynamite should only detonates if there is a shock wave from another explosive material (e,g. from a blasting cap or other small explosive device) passing through the dynamite itself.
So, as said before, the use of blasting caps and shock cord would be reasonable, but another way would be just to have one character stick a M80 or large firecracker of the same explosive force into the dynamite and that would provide a more reasonable situation if the story takes place around 4th of July or some other holiday celebrated with fireworks, but for other times of the year, unless the character steals some blasting caps and some blasting cord from the ware house, he's in trouble as you can't detonate dynamite with intense heat from a fire.

sounds cool...

blasting caps, high voltage, extreme heat, ....also... extremely old dynamite will explode if shaken hard or dropped because old dynamite sweats nitro glycerine..(sweaty dynamite? yes).

tip: This will most likely be the high point "suspense" of the book....basically you need to have the characters(heros) struggle somehow to place/or set off the explosives...where they accidentally awaken some vamps in the process and have to fight a bit first with the head vampire...

In the end one of the characters should sacrafice themselves in order to detonate the explosives because when they pushed the button...it didn't work..omg !...so one of the characters honorably sacrafices themself by setting it off manually....with a gun or fire. Incorporate a love triangle and you got a winner !

Dynamite is a stable explosive and is detonated by means of a blasting cap. A blasting cap consists of a small high-explosive charge (primary explosive) and a detonator that ignites from electrical impulse, heat, or shock. The detonator ignites the primary charge, which provides ignition for the secondary explosive, namely the dynamite.

#8 blasting caps; electric, primacord, or delay fuse. Three sticks is terribly lame. A couple of 10 kg boxes of Compostion-4 or Semtex (bright orange-red color) would be the way to go. You still need the blasting caps and leads.

Wth makes you think explosives kill vampires? They're already dead. You need Claymore mines retrofitted with silver bbs.
