My sunroof is jammed/broken and I plan on fixing it myself ('98 Hyundai Elantra). I got a quote from a mechanic that he would charge $200 just to take off the lining (inside the car on the ceiling) just to get to where he could look at it. So needless to say this must be tricky or take some time. I just don't want to tear up the lining or do something irreversable and create more problems. You don't have to give me full instructions but tips would be appreciated (i.e. "most importantly . . ." or "make sure not to do this . . .")

Just on the removing of the lining, I worry about the actual sunroof when I can get to it and take a look

The reason they charge so much is because they have to remove the windshield or the back window to do it. Look for a guide online to see if you can get part of it unattached and reach in to fix whatever is wrong.

Most headliners are held in place with plastic clips and if you can gently push the clips up or down where they pass through the steel roofing layer you can remove the liner. You can yank the liner out but be careful to not tear the liner and then you'd just have to buy the new clips to re-install it.

It's one of those hair pulling tasks as you are looking up in a confined space to do it. I'd price a new headliner before proceeding and then decide if it's worth doing it yourself. If the price to have it replaced (along with what ever else you tear up or find broken) is more than you care to risk, then let some body shop handle it.

Good Luck!
