Manny is mostly but not completely right. The Linksys WRT54G is famous for hackability, but only versions v4 and earlier, which run on Linux. Later versions use VxWorks software. If hackability is important to you, try to pick up a WRT54G version 4 from eBay or a WRT54GL (essentially a v4 that you can buy new today). None of them are all that expensive, aroudn $100.

Otherwise, this is a commodity market. I personally have a WRT54G v7 which runs stock firmware and it works great.

If you're interested in DD-WRT, try getting a Buffalo router. I have one that is DD-WRT compatible and was only $25. Honestly, you don't need the most expensive router to get a fast broadband connection. All you probably need is a cheap but reliable manufacturer to buy from such as Linksys, Buffalo, & Netgear.

If you are just looking for a regular day to day wireless router look at major players like Linksys, Netgear, and Dlink.

If you want to get more for your money and play with many features look into:

Linksys WRT54G hacked with DD-WRT! The Linksys WRT54G has linux on it with 16MB of memory. Installing DD-WRT you can convert a $50 dollar router into a $600 router/firewall.

DD-WRT will support RADIUS, OpenVPN, Mesh Networking, Wireless Access Point, Wireless Bridge, Virtual Lans (VLANs) and can modify your power strenght to boost your signal.

If you are able to get your hands in a WRT54G v1 to v3 you will not need special instructions to load the DD-WRT firmware. If you get v4 or greater you will need to follow special steps.

Cheers!

One from a reputable company such as Linksys (a Cisco company) or Netgear.

The best one, is the one that meets what ever your requirements are for a wireless router.

Do you need a firewall?
Do you need NAT? Do you need special ALGs for NAT to support specific applications (i.e. some games require these).
Do you need a DHCP server?
Do you need 802.11n or is 802.11G/B good enough?

Depending on what you already have on your network, you might only need a Wireless Access Point?
