There are many online speed testing services that test the download / upload speeds of your internet connection. They may show high differences from your stated connection speed, but they are more like the speeds you actually get from your conncetion. Speakeasy Speed Test is very popular:

Either Use http://www.speedtest.net. Or, when your disconnected click Start -> Connect To -> [Your Internet Service]
and then once your connected, a little yellow box in the bottom right shows the Mbps your getting at the start of the connection...

Log on to your router. You should find connection speed shown under one of the menus. Try tabs like 'status' or 'advanced'.
