The MLB draft is the same as any pro league's amateur draft - it's now teams stock their systems with future major leaguers.

As to how many will automatically play for the Mets, that's tough to say. There's a good chance that a few of their picks will eventually make the club - or be traded to another - but it's not likely to happen until at least 3-4 years down the road because baseball players usually take a few years in the minors.

What? What is the purpose? The purpose is to bring younger players into the league. Sure that doesnt mean that everyone that gets drafted will get a shot at the bigs. Most if not all draft picks go straight to the minors for a little while so the pro teams can see what they've got against other potential major leaguers. If they do good they'll get called up... If not, they'll stay down there. Most guys spend their entire careers in the minors. The players the Mets drafted have to sign with the team and then they will most likely be in the minors until the MLB Mets need them.

Those are the high school and college players that the mets obtained the signing rights to in the recent draft. That means that if these players decide to play baseball this year, they must sign with the mets. They might end up playing on the mets this year, but a large majority of them will go into their minor league system (like the AA Eastern League Affiliate Bighamton Mets). These players would then play in the minors until they earn their shot to play on the major league team. The draft is simply to split up the signing rights so that big spenders like the yankees can't sign all of the new players and put them into their farm system. It is set up very similar to the NFL draft.

Its when these people from a team (coaches or managers) go to a college baseball game and see who plays really good. Then they go up to that player and say "hey, u r really good. How about being on my team next year? Thats what a draft is
