Does a Calif. hourly employee earn overtime (works 40hrs-5 days) if the workplace telephones him, for assistance over the telephone, on his day off?

Yes. If the call was 2 minutes, I probably wouldn't push it, but if it ended up being more like half an hour, turn it in for overtime pay. Legally they have to pay you.

YES! It doesnt matter if the call is two seconds or two hours! The overtime is yours.
