IdahoMike, why would my toilet smell like ammonia? I don't understand why any of the pipes would be smelling like that.

It is most likly coming from the toilet drain pipe...they are connected. The washer drain pipe probably dose not have a trap on it to prevent the odor coming back up... have a plumber check it out.

Sounds like a vent (or lack of) problem. If the drain is not vented properly, when other fixtures are used (toilet, sinks etc) the trap on the line is sucked dry and allows sewer gas to come into the home. Sewer gas contains Methane and is not healthy. That may be what you are smelling.
