This begs a more basic question: What am I? After all, how we will know how many of us there are unless we first identify what, exactly, it is that we are counting?
Many people place themselves entirely within their mind - a nonphysical entity generated on biological hardware that interacts with the physical world by that means. I suspect that they're thinking FAR too small, and I think it's fairly easy to demonstrate:
What does a driver say when he gets in a car accident? He says, "That guy hit ME." Not 'that car hit my car'. The difference is a significant one. I think a person's identity both comes from and flows out to all the institutions and objects that are interacted with in a meaningful way. Thus, a person IS a contruction worker, or IS a friend. These aren't just activities. They are definitions of YOU.
So how many of me are there? Just the one... but my me required hundreds (if not thousands) of people, places, things, and events to properly identify. My parts are legion, and many of them are completely independant entities in their own rights. It's easy to focus on the entities and say that there are thousands of me instead of just one... and it may be just as accurate.
The one is many, and the many are one. That is me. And now you are me as well.

Becoming 'aware' of the different parts of yourself is the key to returning to being your authentic Self. You are noticing defensive parts of the learned egoic self. You are not these defensive patterns of thought, feeling and behavior of the mind/body sytem. Reality mirrors that system until you become the observer and start deleting the software glitches.

The true self is one but surprisingly with many layers covering it,the goal in life of discovering self is really to unravel each layer. For example many people have negative thinking,or fear,or bad habits that add more layers to the true inner self, and just like an onion one most remove each obstacle blocking the flow of authentic self before they can become one.We are a product of many influences, but the ultimate self is one flame in the universe, combining with other flames to form light and the goodness of Gods design. ~The adviser
